How to Cook Ground Chicken
Chicken's a staple in many family kitchens. If you eat poultry, then boneless skinless chicken breasts, whole fryers and chicken wings are likely a dog-eared page of your weekly cooking catalog.
Now, how about ground chicken? For many, it's just not as common. Yet, much like ground beef, ground chicken is simple to prepare, easy to season and delicious in meatballs, burgers, lettuce wraps and more.
Looking for some tips on how to cook ground chicken? You've come to the right place.
Cook ground chicken at a lower temperature
Chicken doesn't have as much fat content as ground beef, and because of that, it will dry out more easily. Be sure to cook it at a lower temp. If you're cooking in a skillet, aim for medium heat.
Add some moisture
Another trick for ensuring that ground chicken doesn't dry out during cooking is to add moisture. Dairy works especially well for this. For chicken burgers or meatballs, consider adding a dollop of yogurt or a splash of milk to help the meat mixture bind together and stay succulent. You can also add in ground beef or ground pork to work in some more fat content, which will help with moisture as well as flavor.
Make sure there's no more pink
You might already cook ground beef this way — until there's no more pink — but it's critical for chicken. Just like with chicken breasts, you need to cook chicken until no more pinkness in the meat remains. Otherwise, you risk serving raw chicken. It's a little trickier to check the temperature on ground chicken, so simply break up the meat in the skillet as you cook it until you can no longer see any pink inside. For chicken burgers or meatballs, you want to make sure the meat reaches 165 degrees F inside.
Don't skimp on seasoning
Ground chicken is like a blank canvas. To really succeed with ground chicken, amp up the flavor profile. Stunning spice blends, tongue-tickling chiles, funky fermented veggies and sauces all add to the result, making ground chicken more exciting. At the very least, salt and pepper your ground chicken to stay out of the realm of blandness.
